The “Starts with One” campaign and WSHA partnered with providers from Providence Regional Medical Center Everett and North Valley Hospital to develop two new peer-to-peer videos highlighting practical strategies to help prevent prescription opioid misuse.

The videos feature nurses and prescribers who share how healthcare professionals play a critical role in patient safety and prevention efforts.

The nurse champion video discusses why conversations about safe medication storage and disposal matter, and how nurses have a responsibility to educate patients and their families to reduce the risk of medications being misused in the home.

The prescriber champion video highlights the importance of co-prescribing naloxone alongside opioid prescriptions, and how this practice can help prevent overdose and save lives. It also emphasizes the role providers play in reducing stigma around naloxone through routine patient conversations, helping shift community attitudes and reinforcing naloxone as a standard safety precaution.

These videos were created to support healthcare teams with relatable, real-world perspectives from fellow Washington providers. They are designed to share in staff meetings, trainings, onboarding, and internal communications.

The Starts with One campaign offers a variety of free, customizable resources to support healthcare providers and facilities in preventing prescription opioid misuse, including patient education materials, provider tools, and implementation examples from hospitals across Washington.
