Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, employees involved in a strike or lockout of a multi-employer bargaining unit are eligible to receive unemployment insurance benefits. Benefits extend up to six weeks after the standard disqualification period and a subsequent one-week waiting period is complete. Standard unemployment qualifications apply.

The provisions apply broadly to Washington employers, including hospitals. The law includes a sunset provision that terminates in 2035. Details of the law can be found in this WSHA bulletin. Contact Remy Kerr, WSHA policy director, with any questions. (Remy Kerr)
